Music therapy is the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Music has nonverbal, creative, structural, and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact, interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication, and personal development.
Canadian Association of Music Therapists Annual General Meeting, Vancouver, British Columbia, May 6, 1994
I am nationally certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists and accredited by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists to practice music therapy as a clinical provider.
For nearly a decade, I practiced full-time with children and families at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone Health, one of the highest-ranked medical centers in the United States. My work has been featured in the media, including in the New York Daily News and on Fox 5 NY News, and I have presented at local, regional and national conferences on a variety of topics. Some of my areas of specialty include pediatric oncology and hematology, palliative and respite care, bereavement, autism, special care and geriatrics.
I completed a Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) degree at Capilano University and a clinical internship at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in 2008. In 2016, I completed a Master of Music (MM) degree with concentration in music therapy through Colorado State University with special focus on neurological sciences, music and research. I have also completed advanced training through the R.F. Unkefer Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy. Prior to pursuing a career in music therapy, I completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in psychology at the University of British Columbia.
My music therapy sessions are customized to address each client’s individual needs through careful assessment. Goals and objectives are defined at the beginning of the treatment process, and personalized music-based interventions are designed to achieve results. These goals and objectives are re-assessed, and interventions are evaluated upon systematic review of client progress.
All music therapy services I provide adhere to a professional Code of Ethics.
I am also available to provide professional supervision through video chat to music therapists or music therapy students seeking guidance, consultation and mentorship. My experience includes supervising practicums for two graduate level music therapy students from Molloy College in Long Island, NY. Please contact me for further details or to inquire about my rates and availability.
